The door moves along metal tracks using rollers which are commonly constructed of either metal or nylon. Finally, a set of springs support the door and assist the motor in lifting the door away from its closed position. Depending on the specifics of the door, there may also be safety sensors which prevent the door from closing if an object is obstructing it.
Because there are so many components which must work together for a garage door to function properly, there are multiple points where issues can arise either as the result of improper installation, damage, or simple wear and tear over time.
One of the most important components of the door are the panels themselves. In order for the door to operate smoothly, the panels must be straight and rigid. Panels can potentially be damaged through use or improper installation, so it is important to check the condition of the panels once an install is complete. A garage door with uneven panels will potentially rattle, close roughly, or bind entirely and not close at all.
Additional issues can arise with the tracks or with the rollers. Tracks must be properly aligned in order for the door to operate smoothly. If the tracks are not aligned properly when the door is installed, the door may rattle or have difficulties opening smoothly. These problems can be similar to the problems created by damaged panels since the overall effect on the door's operation is similar, so if a door seems to be binding or closing roughly both the panels and the track alignment should be checked.
Finally, the rollers and the tracks require lubrication to function smoothly and quietly. Garage doors that are especially noisy likely just require lubrication of one of these components. If the door is especially noisy and lubrication does not seem to help, one possible solution is to replace metal rollers with nylon rollers. If the marginal extra cost is not an issue and smooth, quiet operation is a concern, then using nylon rollers during installation may be worth considering.
